A Time to Celebrate
As luck (or in this case, history) would have it, several countries in the Americas are celebrating important anniversaries this year. Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Venezuela are all commemorating the bicentennials of their respective independence uprisings, which eventually led them to break free from Spanish colonial rule.
As such, the time is right for all kinds of celebrations and events, parades and speeches, parties and social gatherings. But, above all, it's a time to reinforce harmony, solidarity and fraternity, key elements of a just society.
These celebrations also give us the chance to get to know the historical ups and downs of our people and to gain a better grasp of our culture. If you're planning a trip to Mexico during September or November, you'll be able to see how Mexicans celebrate their independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution. In July, those who visit Buenos Aires will witness Argentina's bicentennial celebration, which is observed on the 9, while Colombia will do the same in memory of its own independence on July 20. Also in September, Chile will honor 200 years of national history.
Make the most of these opportunities, not only to enjoy the festive spirit but also to learn more about your continental neighbors.
Happy trails.
