Compact quality
The proliferation of smartphones has threatened the dominance of digital cameras when it comes to taking pictures on the spot. Even if the image quality of your average phone camera doesn't hold a candle to that of midrange digital cameras, the fact that most people carry phones and can send images instantly to friends and family adds a valuable plus.

So what are digital cameras to do? For starters, further widen the picture quality gap, which is precisely what Samsung's new HZ35W model does best. The HZ35W comes with a powerful 24 mm ultra wide angle and 15x optical zoom. The camera's optical image stabilization system ensures that your shots will remain sharp regardless of how much you zoom into the subject. With its lens retracted, the camera measures a very portable 1.3 inches thick, small enough to fit most pockets.

The camera also offers high-definition video recording, the choice of point-and-shoot or manual modes and a plethora of in-camera editing tools. But perhaps the most innovative feature is a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) technology that allows you to "geotag" your photos, which means you can record the longitude and latitude coordinates of the exact location that the picture was taken.
