Ausente/Stop-Loss
Ryan Phillippe, Abbie Cornish
Brandon King (Phillippe) is a small-town hero returning after a final tour of Iraq. Looking forward to life away from the war, he soon learns that he has been "stop-lossed," an order that the U.S. Army employs to send soldiers back to involuntary duty. Director Kimberly Peirce takes on a controversial and little-known part of life after military service, and how it affects soldiers. A strong cast headed by Phillippe and Cornish makes the film a gritty, hard look at the realities of war, family and life that few films on this subject have been able to show.
Las ruinas/The Ruins
Jonathan Tucker, Jena Malone
A group of 20-something Americans are enjoying a Mexican vacation when curiosity takes them to search for a missing man in an abandoned Mayan temple. Warnings and shots by the locals about the dangers ahead only mark the beginning of their journey. Unlike recent horror films with unrelenting gore, this is also a tale of survival that takes the audience into a world where disturbing the unknown can be a test to one's own endurance. A solid cast makes the frightening scenes work and the viewer question who will remain alive.
